Analyzing Positive and Negative Effects of Slang in Family Guy

Abstract

This qualitative research aims to explore positive and negative effects of the slang used in the series “Family Guy”. The focus of the study is to identify and categorize the slang into different types based on the function they perform in an utterance, and the effect they have on the listeners. The study also examines the origin of the slang and the connotation associated with it. The review of the literature delves into the other relevant researches in the area of slang, considering the input of contemporary use and effects of it. It offers an insight into the etymology and various word formations that evolved during years. For analysis, the data are triangulated through a theoretical framework of a theory of effects of slang by Swanson and Golden (2010). The qualitative approach is adopted as research design. The data are analyzed through the postulates of the applied framework. On the basis of the findings, it was concluded that the slang used in Family Guy show is mainly negative and associated with vulgar connotations.
