Evaluating the Efficacy of Traditional Motivational Strategies in Resources Constrained L2 Classrooms: A Case study of Female Government colleges in Hyderabad
Abstract
English is widely used in Pakistan in governmental and non-governmental institutions. Meanwhile, it is also second major language as means of communication in various organizations across Pakistan, which increases the significance of English in the country. Furthermore, teachers and students have been working hard to adopt this language at the same time they face various issues in adopting the foreign language. The proportion of female is increasing in the workforce of Pakistan which requires them to learn English for purpose of communication. Therefore, teachers have been implementing few motivational strategies that can motivate students to learn English as a second language. In this regards, the following study is aimed to assess motivational strategies used by teachers on L2 learners particularly in Girls Degree College of Hyderabad. For this purpose, 30 students, and 8 teachers were interviewed from the college, and data was analysed thematic methodology. The findings of the study suggest that female learners are acknowledging their teachers have been making every possible effort to teach them. However, teacher’s perception differs, since teacher state that they do not have sufficient resources to further strengthen the learning process in the college, and incorporate the latest strategies into the traditional strategies. Furthermore, English learning processes can be further strengthened through bringing technology in the learning English, and enable teachers to teach more effective than before. Meanwhile, the study also holds value for the reader in terms of recommendations and future implications.
