"Orientalist Aloys Sprenger: A Research Review of His Biography, Academic Legacy, and Criticism of the Prophetic Seerah"

Abstract

This research article presents a critical and analytical study of the life, scholarly contributions, and Seerah-related views of Aloys Sprenger, one of the prominent nineteenth-century Orientalists who worked extensively on Islamic history, Hadith literature, and the biography of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The study explores Sprenger’s intellectual background, academic career, and his role in the development of Orientalist scholarship during the colonial era. Special attention is given to his major writings, particularly his work on the Prophetic Seerah, in order to understand his methodology, sources, and interpretive approach toward Islamic history. The article further examines Sprenger’s analysis of revelation, prophethood, Hadith literature, and the socio-political dimensions of the Seerah. It critically evaluates the extent to which his views were influenced by Orientalist assumptions, rationalist interpretations, and the intellectual environment of nineteenth-century Europe. Alongside highlighting his contributions in manuscript collection, cataloguing, and historical documentation, the research also identifies methodological weaknesses, historical inaccuracies, and biases found in his treatment of Islamic sources. Using historical, analytical, and comparative research methods, the article aims to provide a balanced academic assessment of Sprenger’s legacy in Seerah studies. The research concludes that although Sprenger rendered significant academic services in the preservation and study of Islamic manuscripts, his interpretation of the Prophetic Seerah was often shaped by Orientalist perspectives that require careful scholarly critique and reevaluation within the framework of authentic Islamic sources.
