THE ROLE OF CHISHTI SUFIS IN THE ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE URDU LANGUAGE

Abstract

The Chishti Sufi order played a significant role in the development and promotion of Urdu language in the Indian subcontinent. Through their spiritual teachings, literary contributions, and close interaction with the common people, the Chishti saints helped bridge the gap between elite and popular cultures. Unlike scholars who primarily used Arabic and Persian, the Chishti Sufis adopted local languages and dialects to communicate their message effectively. This practice contributed to the emergence and growth of a common linguistic medium that later evolved into Urdu.

This study explores the contribution of the Chishti Sufis to the origin and evolution of the Urdu language. It examines the role of prominent Chishti saints, particularly Baba Farid, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, Nizamuddin Auliya, and Amir Khusrau, in promoting linguistic and cultural interaction. The study further analyzes the impact of Chishti teachings, Sufi literature, malfuzat, and poetry on the formation of Urdu vocabulary, style, and literary expression. Drawing upon historical and literary sources, the article argues that the Chishti Sufis not only facilitated the spread of Urdu among the masses but also enriched its literary and cultural foundations. Their contributions played a vital role in transforming Urdu into a vibrant language of communication, spirituality, and literature in South Asia
