Pragmatic Analysis of Politeness Strategies in Pakistani Morning Shows: A Study through Geoffrey Leech's Politeness Maxims

Abstract

The current qualitative study attempts to analyze selected episodes of the Pakistani morning show Good Morning Pakistan to investigate the various ways speakers employ politeness strategies in interactions. in the light of Geoffrey Leech's Politeness Principle. The research deals with the way hosts and guests employ politeness to maintain social harmony, build positive relationships and enable effective communication. It examines the application of Leech's six politeness maxims namely tact, generosity, approval, modesty, agreement and sympathy in the conversations of media participants. This study investigates how the hosts and guests employ polite expressions, compliments, supportive comments, respectful responses and agreement strategies to establish a friendly and cooperative atmosphere. The results indicate that the participants often use expressions of approval, appreciation and sympathy to reduce conflicts and to maintain positive social relations. The analysis indicates that politeness strategies play a significant role in the development of conversations and the enhancement of communication between speakers and audiences. Further the study finds that politeness is an important dimension of Pakistani television discourse as it promotes respect, cooperation and social bonding. The present research contributes to the understanding of politeness in media communication and the impact of linguistic choices on interpersonal relationships.
