Abstract:
Dr. Waheed Qureshi was a distinguished Pakistani researcher, critic, linguist, educationist, and editor. He possessed equal expertise in both Urdu and Persian literature. Dr. Waheed Qureshi was born in Mianwali in 1925 and passed away in Lahore on October 17, 2009.This research paper presents a critical and analytical study of the Khususi Number of the quarterly research journal Sahifa, published under the editorship of the renowned scholar, critic, and linguist Dr. Waheed Qureshi from 1966 to 1974. Published by the Majlis-e-Tarraqi-e-Adab, Lahore, Sahifa was originally established in 1957 under Sayed Abid Ali Abid to foster quality literary research and provide a platform for both emerging and established writers.
When Dr. Waheed Qureshi assumed leadership in late 1966, he introduced revolutionary editorial standards characterized by rigorous academic discipline, textual correction, and objective criticism. During his tenure, published in “Sahifa” the khususi numbers, a comprehensive five-part Ghalib Number (1969), the Taj Number, the Abid Number, the Persian Literature Number, the Hali Number, and a two-part Iqbal Number.
The paper highlights how these special volumes set a new benchmark in Urdu literary journalism. In particular, the extensive five-volume tribute to Ghalib outperformed contemporary journals across South Asia, featuring pioneering research articles, rare documents, and unpublished letters. Supported by insights from distinguished literary figures, the study demonstrates that Dr. Qureshi’s editorial vision elevated Sahifa into a premier research journal. Today, these khususi numbers remain indispensable, foundational primary sources for scholars, critics, and students of Urdu literature.
